You Will Soon Be Able to View Two Apps at Once on Your iPad

The iPad has always been restricted to running just one app on its screen. But in May, Apple rumor blogs began reporting that the company appears to be developing a multitasking tool that would give you a split-screen option, in the company’s new mobile operating system iOS 8.

This Thursday morning, we finally have video proof, courtesy of developer Steven Troughton-Smith.

The video was first posted by Mark Gurman on 9to5 Mac:

Troughton-Smith was able to hack into the iOS 8 iPad Simulator to get the feature to (sort of) work. As you can see from the video, you can’t yet run two apps side-by-side. But the fact that you can minimize and adjust one window within iOS 8 is a good indicator that Apple is testing the tool.

These code discoveries don’t necessarily mean that multitasking is coming to the iPad this year. But it’s a solid indication that it’s coming soon.

As you might recall, Microsoft’s Surface tablet already supports this feature, as does Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. And both companies have sought to exploit this weakness in the iPad’s capabilities in their advertising.

It’s likely we’ll see what Apple has in store for its tablet operating system this fall. In the meantime, we’ll be watching for more secret iOS 8 goodies to pop up.
